Although they are among the most beautiful of ground covers for the shade, they can be particular if they don’t receive good ventilation, a good well drained soil that is high in organic matter, and adequate shade. Some species can be slow growing, but well worth the wait.
canadense (Canadian Wild Ginger)  Round purplish-brown flowers with white centers are produced in the spring below heart-shaped, fussy, semi-glossy leaves.  Great native groundcover for the shad, and one of the easiest Asarums to grow.  When crushed, the rhizomes give off a strong ginger smell.  6-10".  Spring to summer.
